Falk Richter is counted among the formative voices of contemporary European theatre. His work fuses political thought with emotional force, intellectual sharpness with a sensuous physicality.
Since the mid-1990s he has directed at leading stages at home and abroad, including the Berliner Schaubühne, the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg, the Burgtheater Vienna, the Münchner Kammerspiele, the Schauspiel Hannover, the Schauspielhaus Zürich, the Hamburg and the Vienna State Opera, as well as the Dramaten Stockholm, the Nationaltheatret Oslo, the Kongelige Teater Copenhagen, the Internationaal Theater Amsterdam, the Théâtre National Strasbourg and the Théâtre National de Bruxelles.
He has also been represented at renowned festivals such as the Ruhrtriennale, the Salzburg Festival and the Festival d’Avignon.
As a writer he became known in 1998 with »God Is a DJ«, followed by numerous other plays such as »Electronic City«, »Under Ice«, »Trust«, »Small Town Boy«, »Fear« and »Je suis Fassbinder«. His play »THE SILENCE« was invited to the 2024 Berliner Theatertreffen and the Mühlheimer Theatertage and received the Friedrich-Luft-Preis.
Richter’s texts have been translated into more than 40 languages and performed worldwide. Frequently Richter combines text, dance and music into powerful, boundary-crossing forms. Together with choreographer Anouk van Dijk he has created eight internationally celebrated dance-theatre works distinguished by a singular aesthetic signature; most recently in 2025 with »A Perfect Sky« at the SchauSpielHaus Hamburg.
From 2019 to 2024 he held a professorship in Performing Arts at the Danish National School of Performing Arts in Copenhagen. Richter has been a guest professor at the Hochschule für Schauspielkunst Ernst Busch in Berlin and at the Theater Academy Hamburg and has given masterclasses in Paris, Madrid, Amsterdam, Vienna, Venice and Tel Aviv.
The critics’ poll of the journal Theater heute named him Director of the Year in 2018.
In 2019 he received the Special Teddy Award at the Berlinale. The award honors films and personalities that address social diversity and advocate for tolerance, acceptance, solidarity and equality.
In 2024 the French Ministry of Culture awarded him the order Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, having already bestowed on him the rank of Chevalier in 2018. The order recognizes individuals who have distinguished themselves through artistic or literary creation in France and internationally.
