2017ICH BIN EUROPA

I AM EUROPE
FEAR and other plays in German.

Germany, autumn 2015: in a country that is seen by many as a free and open country on the move, fear is rampant. Fear of the foreign, fear of dying out, of being abolished, of being alienated. Suddenly, images of the enemy that were thought to have been overcome return to the consciousness. This is where Falk Richter’s scandalous play FEAR comes in and holds up a mirror to society.

In his current plays, Richter searches for answers to the pressing questions of our time: What are the possibilities of theatre today – to what extent are artists victims of censorship and self-censorship? Is Europe still a safe place in view of the current challenges? And is the open society viable? How dangerous is the turn towards the nationalistic? This volume brings together the five latest pieces by Falk Richter, which develop their very own, unmistakable sound.

With a foreword by Daniel Schreiber and contributions by Sibylle Baschung, Liane Bednarz, Nils Haarmann, Mazlum Nergiz and Tobias Schuster.
