Boy meets girl – and everything happens like in a film. “I love you” said breathily in Dolby stereo, she a bit like a mixture of Janis Joplin, Zarah Leander and Marusha, first she is Nathalie, then Mrs Sibylle Maiwald again; he is Patrice, then Riccardo: Richter examines the myth of love in a succession of short cuts from legendary screen love scenes. The characters change roles and film parts at a rapid pace, playing with this repertoire of borrowed identities, switching between genres and realities and last but not least marking the cuts between film quotes, Hollywood passion and the search for the “bit with genuine emotion” and a language of love. “You know, this American film I told you about on our first night. The moment she says “I love you” the film is over.”
