“What would it be like: You walk along the street and you run into yourself: If that over there is me, then who am I? Am I that as well? Would we be able to stand being issued in series and then being recalled if our employers wanted to complain about a fault in us?”

Bernard, mid-30s, is undergoing a hospital examination when he is suddenly finds himself among a number of people who look exactly like him. None of them, the clones discover, is the original. Bernard confronts his father Salter in an effort to trace the secret of his origins.
