Je suis Fassbinder

»France has its Front National and the Le Pens; Germany its Höckes, Petrys, and von Storchs. Richter weaves this present and the leaden years together in a virtuoso cross-synapsing of temporal strands and fragments of thought.«

Je suis Fassbinder does not retrace the life of the German filmmaker, but uses this “figure” as a lens through which to examine our current era and question the position of the artist: Who could be a Fassbinder today? What does it mean to make theatre in the world we live in? What are we allowed to say or not say? Evoking the figure of Fassbinder speaks directly to our present moment, especially to the issue of self-censorship in the arts—an issue that is increasingly relevant.
Following Small Town Boy, presented in January at TNS, associate playwright Falk Richter returns for Stanislas Nordey’s first production in Strasbourg. Although the two directors each have a different relationship to the stage, they share a commitment to a “direct” form of theatre and a language that fully engages with the urgent questions of contemporary society.
