„Look up here, I’m in heaven, I’ve got scars that can’t be seen …“
Thomas Jerome Newton, the alien who “falls” to Earth to find water for his desert planet, has lost his mission and ends up disillusioned, lonely and broken. He wants to die, to return to the stars, but he is trapped inside himself, haunted by figures orbiting him, blurring the boundaries between hallucination and reality – as in a fever dream. Tormenting demons haunt him, but also a girl who promises redemption …
In 1976, David Bowie himself played the alien in the film version of Nicolas Roeg’s science fiction classic.
Forty years later, Bowie continues to write the story of Newton – together with the Irish playwright Enda Walsh. Bowie includes many of his great songs, including “Absolute Beginners”, “Heroes” and “This is not America”, as well as new songs composed especially for the brilliant musical. Alongside the album “★”, “Lazarus” is Bowie’s last work before his death in 2016.
